Negro began his career by winning both his 5 and 6-year-old Stallion Show competitions in a highly convincing fashion and was the highest placed Dutch horse at the 2001 FEI Young Horse Championships. By the early seven he was winning at Prix St. Georges.

He continued his easy progress up the levels and earned a score over 70% in his first Grand Prix with trainer/rider Anne van Olst. Anne has commented that Negro's piaffe and passage "is maybe the best I've seen in my life and he is doing it out of fun!" Negro has also been given a high Dressage Index score of 159 points.
